Representatives of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan held another meeting in Bishkek, at which they discussed the demarcation and delimitation of a section of the joint border. This was announced on Friday by the press service of the Kyrgyz government.
“ In accordance with the schedule of meetings for 2023 and the agreement reached through diplomatic channels, in Bishkek, from April 1 to April 7, 2023, regular meetings of topographic working groups and working groups on legal issues of the government delegations of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan on delimitation and demarcation of the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border ,” the report says.
As the press service assured, the work of the parties will be continued.
” In particular, the next meeting of the working groups is planned on the territory of the Republic of Tajikistan ,” the message says.
According to the Tajik Foreign Ministry, “the meeting was held in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding.”
The length of the state border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is about 980 km. Negotiations on its delimitation (determination of the state border with a description of its passage and mapping) have been ongoing since December 2002. Currently, more than two thirds of the border line has been identified and mutually recognized by the states, the remaining sections are considered controversial. The unsettledness of this issue has repeatedly become the cause of conflicts involving local residents and servicemen of the two republics, including with the use of firearms. The last of these occurred in early autumn 2022, on the Kyrgyz side, more than 60 people died during the clashes.
In total, more than 10 serious conflicts have occurred on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border since 2014 . Kyrgyzstan borders on China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. It remains only with the Tajik side to complete the process of delimitation and demarcation of the border.
